Devotional is a documentary project about places, practices and constructions of popular religiosity in Argentina. A research on the spontaneous canonizations of apocryphal saints and the worship of sites considered as sacred by a series of communities.
After European colonization, Latin America was witness of a religious syncretism which resulted from the miscegenation of the different cultures that joined in these regions. These new popular cults revolve around real people who lived in those regions and who, due to a series of circumstances related to their life or death, were elevated to the category of saints.
These cults manifest in a manner similar to Christianity: praying; doing pilgrimage to the places where the remains of the saint are supposed to be buried, lighting candles, making wishes and promises, and providing flowers and other votive offerings. These offerings playing a key role in the practice of these devotions, since the sanctuaries host a fascinating panoply of objects that act as a tribute.
The sanctuaries, following the collective nature of the cults, become a communal and heterodox architecture. D.I.Y. constructions made by generous donations, built on recycled materials and whose typology that has little to do with sacred geometry or standardized monumentality. These worldly sanctuaries are a valuable testimony of this improvised and informal religiosity, as well as a faithful reflection of the beliefs and concerns of the worshippers. This photography project aims to summarize, or, at least, to provide a record, of the complexity of these manifestations.
